BRITISH High Commissioner Boyd McCleary leaves Malaysia next week on a high note ¬– with some even viewing him as a “hero”.

Midway through his term, Malaysia was in danger of losing its visa-free status with Britain but the towering envoy played a key role in building bridges between both nations during that testy period in 2008.

Moving on to virgin territory

Adapted from New Straits Times, 12th July 2010

WALKING the streets of Belfast a little more than 40 years ago, the last thing on the mind of the gangling youth would have been the possibility of being a head of state one day.

And for good reason, too, as the latter part of the 1960s saw the people of Northern Ireland set on living as normally as they could in a land rent by conflict between Catholics and Protestants.

Yet, William Boyd McCleary, outgoing British high commissioner to Malaysia, is set to become the next governor of the British Virgin Islands (BVI), one of the last vestiges of British colonial history.

Warming up the green energy

Adapted from New Straits Times, 9th July 2010
THE new British government, the first coalition government in Britain in 65 years, is setting out its stall. One of the key objectives is to balance the need for growth with the need to reduce our carbon footprint. The aim is for Britain to have a high-growth but low-carbon economy.

Malaysia and Britain each faces the challenge of moving our respective economies on to the next stage of development. In Malaysia's case, it is to escape from the "middle-income trap" and move from middle income to high income. In Britain's case, it is the need to tackle the twin burdens of debt and deficit and safeguard our position as one of the world's leading economies.

Envoy: UK response was swift

Adapted from New Straits Times, 5th June 2010

The United Kingdom had immediately responded to the attack on the Gaza-bound Mavi Marmara humanitarian aid ship by Israeli forces by condemning the attack.

Acting British High Commissioner to Malaysia Ray Kyles said in Kuala Lumpur that it was unfair to claim that the UK, among others, continued to condone the severe and recurring acts of state terrorism carried out by Israel.

Adapted from Malaysian Insider, 18th March 2010

By Lee Wei Lian

KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 — British companies can help in moving Malaysia up the economic value chain says British High Commissioner Boyd McCleary.

The New Economic Model (NEM) emphasizes high value economic activities based on innovation and intangible asset creation such as branding and proprietary technologies, areas where the UK is strong.

In a recent interview with The Malaysian Insider, McCleary pointed out that the creative industry in the UK is now bigger than the financial services industry where it is an acknowledged global leader.

With a little help from her friends, Malaysia is geared to mine – with an aim to own – her biodiversity for tomorrow’s cancer drugs.

WITHIN our forests and seas, a wealth of plant and animal species awaits discovery.

Within them lies a wealth of chemical species, similarly unfamiliar and among which may just be the key components capable of turning the tide in our favour in the war against cancer.

Adapted from The Star, 19th February 2010

Letter to the Editor

By BOYD MCCLEARY

I REFER to Mustafa Qadri’s article “Just how committed are the Western powers to Afghanistan?” (The Star, Feb 11).

He strongly implies that the Western powers are keen to get out quickly, leaving the job half done. On the contrary, the answer to Qadri’s question is that the UK and the international community are absolutely committed to bringing stability and progress to Afghanistan.
